Oxygen-sensing packaging
Oxygen-sensing packaging
2012-07-09 Edited by Lisa McTigue Pierce, Editor -- Packaging DigestOxygen-Sensing Smart Package Technology measures oxygen non-invasively inside sealed packages for the food, beverage, medical, pharmaceutical and electronics industries. The "smart package" is made by incorporating a small amount of an oxygen-sensitive luminescent dye inside the package itself, mixed in with resins for film, bottles or closures, for example. Using a remote optical device, users can then measure O2 either in the gas phase environment of a dry package, in the headspace of a liquid package or of dissolved-oxygen in fluids and beverages. This technology eliminates destructive package testing and enables non-contact, rapid, real-time O2 measurements.
