Seventeen food and fruit vendors were on Wednesday arraigned in a Nyeri court for disobeying an order prohibiting food hawking in the county.

Five were fined Ksh.2,500 for operating without county and health licenses while the other 12 vendors were released after the court stated that the cash bail they had deposited with police on Saturday would stand for them till Friday when public health officials will table a report in court.

This was after the Vendors Association Chairperson Maina Kamami told Magistrate Weddy Kagendo that they had already settled the matter with the Nyeri County Health CEC Dr. Racheal Kamau.

The Magistrate further warned the vendors that they would be fined heavily if they continued contravening the Public Health Act.

The Nyeri County Government on Tuesday banned food hawking in the county following reports of rising cases of Cholera outbreaks in several parts of the country.

While issuing the ban, Health CEC Dr. Racheal Kamau further ordered for re-inspection of food outlets in the county to ensure adherence by the Public Health Act.
