McDonald’s has partnered with meat substitute company Beyond Meat to trial a new plant-based burger called the P.L.T in Canada.

The fast food corporation will be conducting a 12-week test of its new product starting September 30 in 28 restaurants in Southwestern Ontario. The P.L.T will be priced at CAD 6.49 ($4.90) plus tax.

Standing for plant, lettuce, tomato, McDonald’s P.L.T. is made with a Beyond Meat plant-based patty which features no artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives.

Ann Wahlgren, McDonald’s vice president of global menu strategy said: “We’ve been working on our recipe and now we’re ready to hear feedback from our customers.

“During this test, we’re excited to hear what customers love about the P.L.T. to help our global markets better understand what’s best for their customers.”

Head of consumer insights at McDonald’s Canada, Michaela Charette said: “As a customer-obsessed company, we are committed to continuously testing new menu items to offer a variety of options.

“The P.L.T. complements our existing line-up of craveable burgers and sandwiches, and enables us to assess Canadian’s growing demand for plant-based protein options as well as restaurant experience. During this test we’ll continue to listen to our guests to understand their tastes.”

Beyond Meat recently teamed up with KFC to trial a new plant-based chicken and has introduced a “meatier” version of its plant-based Beyond Burger in the US, created using a mix of pea, mung bean and rice proteins.
