Cider maker cashes in on name confusion

A case of mistaken identity has seen McCashin's Brewery in Stoke seize a sizeable contract with Woolworths Australia.

Brewery spokeswoman Emma McCashin said the supermarket chain phoned thinking it was Mac's – the brand started by the McCashin family before Lion Nathan purchased Mac's and shifted production out of Nelson.

McCashins have since started again at their original premises in Main Rd Stoke, where they operate a cafe and produce a range of beers and ciders.

Mrs McCashin said Woolworths was looking for a "homebrand" type of cider.

"There is a perception in Australia that cider from Nelson, New Zealand, is a premium cider so that was why they called us in Nelson.

"I answered the phone so was able to tell them all about our cider and cidermaking history, with McCashin's Brewery originally being the Rochdale Cider factory and it being surrounded by apple orchards in the late 1930s when it was built."

The brewery "came up with a few options" for Woolworths to try, one of which was called Saxton Cider in reference to the nearby Saxton Field which used to be an apple orchard before becoming a top-class sporting facility, Mrs McCashin said.

"The cider has a slightly sweeter profile than our own Rochdale Cider but has no added sugar, additives or preservatives and is gluten free. It has already won a number of packaging design awards both in New Zealand and the United States."

Saxton Cider will be available exclusively in Woolworths stores (Dan Murphys initially) in Australia in late December and in Progressive stores in New Zealand (Countdown, Foodtown and Woolworths) in January.
