Vending machine stocked with bottles of summer scents unveiled 
at Slough Railway Station

A VENDING machine stocked with bottles of summer scented air has bemused and invigorated Berkshire commuters.

The vending machine – which was commissioned and built by car hire comparison site Holiday Autos – was opened at Slough Railway Station in front of hundreds of commuters on Thursday, July 30.

It is stocked with hundreds of bottles of summer scented air which have been designed to provide ‘gloomy commuters a much needed pick-me up on their way into work’, according to HolidayAutos.

The scents included in the bottles were selected after a poll carried out by the comparison site which asked for the country’s favourite smells. The favourites came back as freshly cut grass, barbecue, sun cream and sea air.

Michael Callaghan, from Holiday Autos, said: “We want to inject as much fun, freedom and frivolity into holidays as possible by giving people back that holiday feeling and something to smile about –we think the Smells of Summer vending machine really does just that.

“What’s more, it’s gone down a storm among the hundreds of commuters in Slough meaning it’s likely that we will want to take our newest invention on the road and bring some summer sunshine to commuters around the country”.

The commuters who got their summery pick-me-up from the bottled aromas were also asked to Tweet their favourite holiday memories to @HolidayAutos using the hashtag #smellsofsummer.

HolidayAutos says 69 per cent of British travellers that they surveyed said smell is the most evocative sense with regard to recalling happy holiday memories – with 82 per cent believing past summer memories offers the perfect pick-me-up when feeling down, leading to the creation of the vending machine.

Solomon Rogers, the vending machine designer, said: “By finding a way to bottle the real smells of summer, from freshly cut grass through to barbecue and sun cream, we’ve found a unique way to transport people back to that happy summer holiday memory - making them feel good for the rest of the day.”
