Extension to offer Cottage Food Law class

The Cottage Food Law allows anyone to sell homemade food stuffs to the public – after taking a food safety training course. The Franklin County Extension Agency is offering such a course to those who would like to sell their homemade goodies.

The Cottage Food Law Safety Course will be offered Sept. 29 in two choices of sessions: from 10 a.m. to noon and from 5-6:30 p.m. The course, which costs $25, will be offered in the Franklin County Extension Room 1 in the Franklin County Courthouse basement. Checks or money orders only will be accepted.

Examples of homemade goodies people might be interested in selling under the Cottage Food Law include cakes, cookies, dried herbs, jams and jellies – all classified as “non-hazardous foods,” which are those protected under the Cottage Food Law. The class will be instructed by regional extension agent Susan Hill and will focus on basic food safety steps.
