AppliTek unveils analytical solution to advance routine testing of beer bitterness

AppliTek has introduced a novel testing instrument for the automatic determination of international bitterness units in beer production, which will be unveiled at this year’s BrauBeviale in Nuremberg, Germany.

With Breweries now setting targets focused on reducing energy and water consumption, process control becomes an essential part of all modern brewing practices. More and more commitments are made in order to improve efficiency and water recycling, whilst adhering to environmental regulations and hygiene requirements. The quality of the final product, however, depends on rigorous control over a set of physical, chemical and microbiological parameters that have become standard in the beer industry in the 20th century.

International bitterness units is a standard measurement of the bitterness of beers, and represents the amount of alpha acids from the hops that have isomerised by the boiling process. The more alpha acids that are isomerised, the higher the actual bitterness in the final product. Given the huge variation in bitterness components, process conditions and perceived differences in taste, beer bitterness tests have become an essential part of quality control procedures in all commercial beer production, even for Microbreweries.

AppliTek marketing executive Emmanuel Coolsaet said: “Modern breweries are high-tech production sites that provide crafted beverages with the assurance of a constantly high standard of quality. Beer bitterness tests have become increasingly part of that standard.

“AppliTek’s role is to develop and provide the right analytical tool allowing our customers to achieve rapid and reproducible results, while increasing laboratory throughput. There is definitely a gap to fill with our technology. ”

The official premiere of the IBULyzer at BrauBeviale in November will signal the starting point of the international market launch of the analyser.
