Ethical Coffee Company develops biodegradable coffee capsules

The Ethical Coffee Company has developed what has been described as ‘the world’s first 100% bio-sourced and biodegradable coffee capsule’.

Fully compatible with Nespresso coffee machines and manufactured from plant fibres, the pods only take six months to decompose in an industrial compost – 199 years and 6 months faster than their Nespresso counterparts, the brand said. Cofico will be the distributor that imports the pods for environmentally conscious coffee drinkers in the UK.

The Ethical Coffee capsules are set apart from Nespresso capsules by their ‘pop technology’. When the water is filtered from the machine through the pod, you will hear a noticeable ‘pop’. This happens when the water has essentially brewed the coffee within the pod and is ready to pour it into the mug, making your coffee more similar to a barista’s cup of coffee than ever before. This may take longer than a Nespresso machine, but the extra time is what is needed to extract all the flavours from the pod and ensure a superior espresso, Cofico said.

Varieties include arabica, espresso, decaffeinato and lungo.
