USDA lifts Spanish pepper ban

USDA lifts Spanish pepper ban
2017-02-20

From:The Packer

Pepper imports from Spain are again allowed into the U.S. after the U.S Department of Agriculture lifted an import ban put in place Dec. 30 of last year.

The ban was put in place because of multiple detections of live Mediterranean fruit fly larvae on peppers from Spain, according to a USDA news release.

Spain has implemented new safeguards to prevent future Medfly detections, according to the release.

In November, USDA officials visited Spanish greenhouses where peppers are grown for export, and reviewed fruit fly trapping data for 2015-16.

“The APHIS review team concluded that the new procedures being enforced by Spain were adequate to prevent future interceptions,” the agency said in the release.
