PureCircle announces stevia antioxidant for food and drinks

Stevia producer PureCircle has developed a commercially viable stevia antioxidant product in a bid to give food and beverage companies access to health ingredients for their consumers.

While researchers have known that antioxidants are present in stevia plants, PureCircle claims to be the first company to be able to extract them from the stevia leaf.

The Malaysia-based company said it has created a unique process for extracting and purifying this plant-based antioxidant ingredient at a global scale.

The product is now going through a sampling stage, with a full roll-out expected after US regulatory approval in 2018.

PureCircle’s portfolio currently consists of flavour modifiers and sweeteners.

Vice president of marketing and innovation Faith Son said: “Stevia as an antioxidant will further support beverage and food companies in providing their customers with health benefits and great-tasting products containing compounds commonly found in superfoods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains.

“Although it has been known that stevia plants contain antioxidants, the ability to extract is a major commercial advance.”

Earlier this year PureCircle completed a $42 million expansion of its stevia facility in Malaysia, doubling its production of stevia leaf extract.

The expansion to the automated plant has allowed the group to grow its output at a scale that matches global demand.
