Two Water Supply Projects
Two Water Supply Projects
2010-02-10 Two water supply projects under JNNURM get underway
Under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) five water supply projects have been sanctioned for Surat in Gujarat for augmenting and improving the supply of safe drinking water to its citizens. Out of the five projects, two projects – Water Supply Distribution (WSD) project for Vesu area and WSD project for Pal and Palanpur area, have been completed and become operational. Both these projects were sanctioned in May 2006. According to the ministry of urban development, the projects will provide 59 million litres per day (MLD) water supply to 3.6 lakh population of Vesu and Pal. These areas, despite having merged with Surat Municipal Corporation limits in 2006 were not getting municipal water supply due to supply constraints. These constraints have been overcome with the commissioning of these two projects. The work of providing individual connections to households has started and about 3,000 households have been directly benefited from the projects. Another 7,000 households are expected to be provided drinking water connections by the end of this year, the ministry said. Pal and Vesu fall in the fast developing areas of Surat city. Prior to these JNNURM projects both the areas were using water either from tankers or private bores, though the ground water in these areas is brackish due to vicinity to the sea.
