Heinz continues global rollout of PlantBottle
2012-04-19 -- Packaging Digest-Posted by Lisa McTigue Pierce In celebration of Earth Day, Heinz Canada will reaffirm its commitment to the environment with a plastic bottle that is made from up to 30 percent plant-based material. In a strategic partnership, The Coca-Cola Co. has enabled the H.J. Heinz Co. to produce ketchup bottles using its PlantBottle packaging.
"The revolutionary PlantBottle packaging and our groundbreaking partnership with The Coca-Cola Co. provides a great opportunity for Heinz to advance our environmental stewardship efforts," says Peter Luik, president/CEO, Heinz Canada. "Converting to PlantBottle packaging is a global initiative for Heinz and we are pleased to offer Canadians and their families products and innovative packaging options that help make a difference to the planet we all share."
According to an IMI GlobalPulse study conducted in 2010, 60 percent of Canadians feel that it is very important for companies to offer environmentally friendly products.
Made from up to 30 percent plant material derived from sugarcane, the Heinz Ketchup PlantBottle packaging looks, feels and functions like traditional PET plastic and has the same recyclability as the rest of Heinz Canada's Ketchup lineup. Now Canadians can enjoy the ketchup they love and support the environment. The Ketchup in PlantBottle packaging was launched in restaurant chains across Canada in a 575 mL format in January 2012, and is now available in grocery stores nationally in the 750 mL size.
New label graphics Heinz Ketchup is produced at Heinz Canada's Leamington, Ontario, factory. At launch, Heinz Ketchup sold in PlantBottle packaging will display a special "talking label" that asks consumers to "Guess What My Bottle Is Made Of?", a challenge encouraging Canadians to learn more about the breakthrough PlantBottle packaging technology. Heinz sustainability commitment The H.J. Heinz Co. is striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, solid waste, water consumption and energy usage by 20 percent by 2015 and is on track to achieve or surpass their significant environmental targets. Also, the great tasting Ketchup that Canadians love is made from tomatoes that are grown from Heinz seed by 45 contract growers whose fields are within 100km of Leamington.
