TOTAL income generated by the food and beverages industry in SA increased in nominal terms (current prices) by 5.4% year on year in September, data from Statistics SA showed on Monday.

A positive annual growth rate was recorded for food sales (6.4%).

The food and beverages survey is a monthly survey covering a sample of tax-paying public and private enterprises involved in the preparation of meals and drinks for immediate consumption.

The purpose of the survey is to monitor trends in the food and beverages industry. The figures are also used in the analysis of comparative business and industry performance.

Total income increased by 6.2% in the third quarter of 2014 compared with the third quarter of 2013. The main contributors to this increase were takeaway and fast-food outlets, and restaurants and coffee shops.
