India, the biggest sugar consumer, may produce as much as 23 to 24 million tonnes in the 2010-11 season, as farmers increased planting to benefit from record prices, according to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA). "Production may total 22 mt on a conservative basis," M N Rao, deputy director-general of the association said in an interview at an industry conference in Dubai.

Output this season might be 15.5 to 16mt, he said reinstating a previous forecast by the New Delhi-based association. Maharashtra, the biggest producer, was expected to produce 5.1mt as sucrose recovery had improved, he said. Output in Karnataka state would exceed 2mt, compared with 1.7mt last year.

However, production in UP would be close to 4mt compared with 4.05 mt last year. Most of the sugar mills in the state have started shutting down early this year due to cane shortage and large diversion to gur producing units.

Most mills in the state also experienced a lower recovery this year due to early harvesting and lack of winter rain. UP is the country's second largest producer of sugar after Maharashtra and leading companies like Bajaj Hindustan, Balrampur Chini and Triveni Engineering have operations there.
