With substantial growth rates in 2007, the global beer market once again demonstrated its inherent vitality. Following its increase in 2006, global beer production was up by another 5%. Worldwide, 1,787.4 million hectolitres of beer were brewed in 2007. With 393 million hectolitres, China heads the rankings of major beer producers, followed by the beer nations USA with 233 million hectolitres, Russia with 116 million hectolitres and Germany with 105 million hectolitres.
While beer production output in Germany is declining (-1.9 %), the principal drivers of growth are China, with production up by around 11 %, Russia, with an increase of 16 %, and the Ukraine, where output is up by around 19 %. It is observable overall that the high-growth regions for beer production are located in Eastern Europe, Asia and South America – all of them reporting increases in beer production output.
These growth rates are, of course, also linked to the population's per-capita consumption. While beer consumption in Germany, at 115 litres, is the undisputed front-runner worldwide, the figure for China is 29 litres and the average for the South American nations is 49 litres. The conclusions to be drawn regarding possible increases in beer consumption are obvious.
