This will get your doughnuts dunkin' - September 14 is National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day!

Cure your custard craving and sink your teeth into one of these sweet, fluffy pillows brimming with creamy filling. You can skip the cream and sugar in your morning cup of joe because a cream-filled doughnut will more than make up for it. Depending on where you get your doughnuts, the actual "cream" consistency can differ greatly. Real, honest-to-chef pasty cream is favored, but rarely appears in your neighborhood doughnut shop or chain because it doesn't have a long shelf life.

"Creme" is the most common filling, and it refers to a mix of shortening, confectioner's sugar and vanilla extract. Instant pudding is also popular.

Want to treat yourself to some real cream-filled doughnuts? If you've already stepped in the direction of deep-frying some delicious pastry dough, you're halfway there. Try some spiced rum-cream-filled doughnuts. If it's that kind of day (it is Wednesday after all), rum-filled doughnuts just may be your kind of medicine.
