Applications can be submitted through Jan. 8 on the Bayer website. The award winner for 2014 was Chalmers Carr III, owner and president of Titan Farms, Ridge Springs, S.C. “Recent data has shown that in the U.S. overall produce consumption is down, and that on average Americans consume less than half the daily recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables,” Rob Schrick, horticulture lead for Bayer CropScience, said in a news release. “That means there’s a great need for innovation that can help create a positive shift towards increased produce consumption, and it’s this kind of innovation that Bayer is looking to highlight through the Produce Innovation Award.” Bayer launched this year’s award program at the 41st annual California Association of Pest Control Advisers Conference & Agri-Expo in Reno, Nev. The award is open to any grower who receives a significant portion of income from production a citrus, grape, pome fruit or stone fruit, tree nut, vegetable or potato crop. The winner will be announced during the annual Bayer Ag Issues Forum in New Orleans March 1-2. Prizes include an all-expense paid trip to the forum, a $10,000 grant to advance their innovation or support a community project that also advances produce, and a $2,000 Apple Store gift card.
