The phrase “transition to democracy” has become a cliché in recent years, as journalists and pundits alike race to describe Myanmar’s swiftly changing cultural and political landscape.

But nowhere are the effects of that transition more obvious than in Myanmar’s MyanFood and MyanHotel 2016 expos, which begin today in Yangon’s Myanmar Event Park.

The transnational food and drinks industry shows will this year welcome more goods from more countries than ever before.

Retailers will have a chance to browse everything from rare Japanese beef to Italian wines and Australian fruit juices, as well as the usual selection of top local brands such as Sweety Home and Enchant.

Organised by AMB Tarsus – the leading international trade show organisers in the region – the annual shows provide a window into the changing nature of Myanmar’s goods and services.

Project director Darren Siow said local consumers will see a trickle-down effect as retailers begin sourcing from wider
locations.

“It will have an indirect effect,” he said. “You’re looking at new brands that are looking to start up their promotions in Myanmar.

“What you’re expecting to see in the long run is a greater selection of food products and hospitality products in hotels and restaurants.”

Siow said the Japan Livestock Export Promotion Council will be in attendance, representing the highest quality kobe beef suppliers worldwide.

There will also be several food processing technology companies from India making their first trip to Myanmar, as well as an increase in Italian companies selling baked goods and butchered meats.

“This year’s event is about 25 or 30 percent bigger than last year,” he said, adding that the event space will span about 5500 square metres.

Beatrice Bridi, founder of Prometeo Consulting, has helped bring 20 Italian brands to the expo, many for the first time.

As the only European pavilion, she said the Italian contingent has the potential to crack open the market for high-end products.

“You can’t find much prosciutto in the grocery stores here,” she said.

Other companies at the expo will feature goods from Taiwan, Thailand, China, Malaysia, Singapore and more.

Siow expects more than 7000 guests and added that activity booths will include barista competitions, culinary competitions, pastry innovation demonstrations and more.

AMB Tarsus will also host a MyanBuild expo at the beginning of December.
