Syngenta brings business units together in plans for agri growth

Agriculture company Syngenta will unite two of its functions in an effort to consolidate its position in crop protection, and pursue further growth in seeds.

As part of the restructuring, the research and development and production and supply functions will be brought together. Syngenta head of R&D Trisk Malarkey and Mark Peacock, head of global operations, will leave Syngenta at the end of September.

Syngenta CEO Erik Fyrwald said: “I want to warmly thank Trish and Mark for their outstanding contributions to Syngenta during their distinguished careers here. I wish them both every success in the future.”

In a statement, the Swiss-headquartered business added that Malarkey would leave its R&D function in an industry-leading state, with ‘a pipeline that will deliver value for the company for many years to come’.

Syngenta, which produces solutions to help farmers make better use of their crops, is ambitiously aiming to become the third largest player in seed cultivation.

It recorded group sales of $12.9 billion in 2016, with pre-tax earnings of $2.7 billion.

But it faces increased competition from Bayer, which announced a $66 billion acquisition of US seeds company Monsanto last year.
